Authentication is not implemented -- the username you choose when creating the account in pidgin is ignored. The password has to be a valid GroupMe API token.
As for getting an API token, I think it's done somehow in dev.groupme.com; there may be other ways. It's been somewhat of a while since I've used GroupMe (as a user or a developer), so I'm afraid I'm out of touch.
