Adventure: The Lost Treasure of the Caves

This short side quest uses 6 "Rooms" to divide up each zone. The players for these should progress to the next room and avoid backtracking.

Solution

After The Great War, Finnish-American spy Evelyn Vance returned home to Astoria, Oregon with a treasure. There she purchased some land and built the Watershed Theater. During the Second World War she was hounded by German spies wanting their treasure back. She build an escape route from her theater, through the underground to an old military bunker that US spies used as a safe house.

Evelyn eventually passed away and left her fortune to her nephew known only as Junior.

In 1979, Russian spys attempted to steal the treasure as well. Junior was injured, losing his left eye in the underground but survived.

Room 1: Tapiola Park

Imagine a park with a playground next to a high school, and off on the side is an old tree house. the time of day is around sunset in June in astoria oregon. it rained all day but is now sunny.

Rocky, a high school senior, meets up with the players to show a treasure map, which looks like it is missing a quarter of it torn off, which has been carefully placed in a plastic sandwich bag for protection. But before they start to follow the map, the town bully named Bliff shows up with an equal number of other bullies. He will fight the players and attempt to steal things from them. As soon as he tries for the map, Rocky will pass on the map and hold off the bullies.

The map doesn't really make sense. It's clearly a map of the city. There is a lot of scribble that is difficult to read.

  • Dear Junior.
  • The escape hatch will auto close. If you don't have the key it will reopen after an hour.
  • The spare key is at the top of the tower.
  • Mary had a little lamb (and some notes).

Room 2: Water Drainage

Imagine an underground water drainage system in the spirit of where the ninja turtles or the morlocks would like, except this is going to be in Astoria. there is one large culvert entrance and three exits. on the walls there is graffiti and posters. but under one of the posters is a clue to some treasure

As they walk through a hatch behind them will close shut.

Here if they explicitly decide to check behind the posters they will find a loose brick which will have an envelope with "Junior" written on it and a gold coin.

Room 3: The Bunker

Imagine an underground bunker, abandoned. it probably belonged to some military installation, but has now been sealed up. inside are several desks and file cabinets along with open files and typewriters. there is a coffee maker and some empty beer bottles. it looks like someone was looking for something because the place is torn up. most of the lights don't work, but there is light from a flashlight. there is a closed door with an exit sign above it.

The main desk has a name plackard with the name "E Vance".

If they search the desk they will find a notebook with sheet music.

They just need to start the coffee maker. Once it starts percolating, the door will unlock.

Room 4: The Astoria Column

Imagine a small basement room. all the walls are brick, the floor is concrete and the ceiling is wood. on one side is an open door, the entrance. on the other side is a locked door, and a ladder that goes up to the ceiling where there is a hatch. There is a single lamp fixture in the room by the locked door. The room has a poster of a tower with a graphic of a key. there is also the same graphic of the key on the locked door.

The players need to sneak up to the top. Bliff is hanging out with one of his bully friends. He'll do the usual attempt to steal things from the kids. This time he'll actually try to fight them, but this is just barely PG, so all non-lethal.

Room 5: Musical Storage

A dark storage room with a line of musical instruments that have been stood up next to each other going all the way around the room. Many of them are somehow connected with string and levers in multiple ways. There are two doors. Next to the entrance door is a chair with an upright piano which is connected to all of the strings.

As soon as they enter the room, the door they want to continue through slams shut. They need to play something correctly on the piano. If they make a mistake all the instruments will play a few measures of Ride of the Valkyries.

  • The door they came from slams shut.
  • Both doors become electrified. Touching them is non-lethal but does 1d6 damage.
  • The lights go out.
  • The instruments play nonstop.

This takes place under the community college. If one of the players has an older sibling, then they can hear them through the vents practicing singing or playing in a band. They can either solve the puzzle on their own or call out for help to the people practicing music.

Room 6: Watershed Theater

A hatch in the floor of the projector room at the Watershed Theater. It is currently playing a movie about a robot that becomes self aware, what was it called again? It's on the tip of my tongue.

Upon investigation of the room they notice on the projector there are scratched like someone wrote "Vance" with a circle disc shaped hole next to it. If they put one of the coins in the hole it will pop out the rest of the map. Whenever they insert or remove the coin it will cause the projector to blip. Every time after the first time the audience will boo and the projector will dim for approximately 4 seconds.

EST 1925

The players will make a mistake. Rocky will show up (he works there).

The map will show the layout of the theater with a circle drawn around the location of the house left most front row seat with a complicated diagram of how to twist the seat to open a compartment. They just need to go up to the seat to get the case. If they don't stealth to the seat, Bliff will be sitting a few seats away and notice them. They can use Rocky or the coin blips to help sneak their way there and back.

Upon finding the case, the players open it up to find a bundle of really old looking letters and one which is open and unfolded. It reads:

To whoever finds this. You have succeeded and passed the test. After defeating the enemy during the Second World War, for the second time in fact, we divested the enemy treasure into land for the city of Astoria. The Watershed Theater is yours along with the underground network. Enclosed you will find the deed. It has been operated by Junior for the last 40 years.

Signed: E. Vance.
