  1. The GNU General Public License for Developers and Businesspeople
  2. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  3. This tutorial gives a section-by-section explanation of the most popular
  4. Free Software copyright license, the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL),
  5. and teaches software developers, managers and businesspeople how to use
  6. the GPL and GPL'ed software successfully in new Free Software business and
  7. in existing, successful enterprises.
  8. Attendees should have a general familiarity with software development
  9. processes. A vague understanding of how copyright law applies to software
  10. is also helpful. The tutorial is of most interest to software developers
  11. and managers who run software businesses that modify and/or redistribute
  12. software under terms of the GNU GPL (or who wish to do so in the future),
  13. and those who wish to make use of existing GPL'ed software in their
  14. enterprise.
  15. This is not a legal tutorial. By contrast, it explains the GNU GPL to
  16. professionals who are not well versed in the details of copyright law.
  17. Presented by a software developer and manager, this tutorial informs
  18. non-lawyers who wish to have a deeper understanding of how the GNU GPL
  19. uses copyright law to protect software freedom and to assist in the
  20. formation of Free Software businesses.
  21. Upon completion of the tutorial, successful attendees can expect to have
  22. learned:
  23. * the freedom-defending purpose of each term of the GNU GPL
  24. * the redistribution options under the GPL
  25. * the obligations when modifying GPL'ed software
  26. * how to properly apply the GPL to a new software
  27. * how to build a plan for proper and successful compliance with the GPL
  28. * the business advantages that the GPL provides
  29. * the most common business models used in conjunction with the GPL
  30. * how existing GPL'ed software can be used in existing enterprises
  31. The full tutorial take three hours, with time for plenty of questions and
  32. two fifteen minute breaks. An abbreviated one-hour talk that introduces
  33. the the issues covered in the full tutorial is also an option.
