  3. s²'s license and copyright
  4. ===========================
  5. (Before jumping to conclusions about legal stuff, read the *whole* section
  6. first.)
  7. s², including documentation, is licensed under the GNU General Public License
  8. (GPL), version 3 or later (at your choice). Because that is a free software
  9. license, it allows you study and run the code, make changes to your own version
  10. and distribute the updated code the others. This avoids legal vendor lock-in.
  11. There is one and only one exception to the s² is GPL-licensed rule:
  12. the GPL is embedded in the source code and documentation, as a work on itself,
  13. an appendix and attachment and is therefore not consider to be part of s²
  14. proper. It comes with its own license that doesn't allow modification, although
  15. verbatim copying and distribution is allowed.
  16. Keeping track
  17. -------------
  18. Which licenses apply is always indicated in the source code, with a comment
  19. of form `SPDX-License-Identifier: LICENSE OR OTHER-LICENSE`. The GPL,
  20. version 3 or later (at your choice) is abbreviated to `GPL-3.0-or-later`.
  21. Some parts may be dual-licensed under another license.
  22. To whom the copyright belongs is also always indicated, with a comment
  23. of form `Copyright (C) years author` or `Copyright © years author`.
  24. (A conversative stance on eligibility is taken: when in doubt, include
  25. the notice, and always be in doubt.)
  26. These two notices are required from contributors to the upstream project.
  27. As a fork, you can set your own conventions.
