#42 Anonymous issue reporting

Would it be possible to allow anonymous issue reporting (not by default, obviously, but have an option for it)? I would love if my users to be able to report bugs without making an account somewhere. It creates an unnecessary barrier to entry.

The obvious issue is spam. Does Gogs have any built-in spam filter?

None that I'm aware of.

Currently Gogs does not have any way of making anonymous comments. I'll have a look to see if it's feasible to do so, but due to the database structure it may not be particularly trivial.

Keep in mind I have no idea at all about gogs sourcecode at the present moment in time: What if there would be an account, let's name it 'pseudo':

  • which only had the ability to comment,
  • had an pre-defined email address (none@such.tld),
  • no way to change its accounts settings,
  • no option to create repositories/projects (well imo having an "anonymous" contribution option would be nice too, but this is about issue reporting),
  • it belongs to a group which can be given access to repositories,
  • and its actions will be time limited (like: you can only post every 10 minutes).

sounds like a lot of work to me and yes it is definitely inviting spam

frankly anonymous bug reports are more than likely to be useless noise - it is most often the case that you need more information about that particular user's environment

a better idea would be to integrate a bug reporting/crash handler library into the program - at least then you would be guaranteed a proper stack trace and system info

If anonymity is the issue, issues work over Tor. Fake emails work I think, so it is very easy.

If creating accounts is the issue, maybe follow Wikipedia's lead and post it under the IP address (disallow Tor here). Rate limiting etc would matter a lot here.

I think this should be closed as wontfix. At this point I don't see Gogs nor Gitea adopting this feature anytime soon. @pharpend if you want to report an issue anonymously, I suggest you to create a throwaway account with a fake email via Tor.
